Ingredients in Hair Color

Up to the early 1900s, hair color was made from a vaiety of natural and herbal dyes.It was a French chemist named Eugene Schuller who created the first public safe commercial hair color in 1909. The invention was based on a new chemical called paraphenylenediamine, this provided the base and buildiing blocks for his company, the French Harmless Hair Dye Company. Just over a year later, the name was altered to one that is more well known across the world today - Loreal. Loreal is one of the hair product giants in the modern world and has steadily grown over the years, the company credits expansion into markets around the world with its global success and its advanced and applied research of new product development.

The two most typical chemical ingredients in any coloring process that last longer than 12 shampoos are:

Hydrogen peroxide
(also known as the developer or oxidizing agent)
Hydrogen peroxide in different forms and strengths, helps begin the color forming process and helps to create a longer lasting color. The larger the amount of Hydrogen peroxide, the more sulfur is removed from the hair. When hair looses sulfur, it causes hair to harden and lose weight and volume. This is why the developer is typically maintained at 30% volume or less.

Ammonia
Ammonia is alkaline and allows for lightening of the hair by acting as a catalyst when the permanent hair color combines with the peroxide. Similar to all alkalines, ammonia separates the cuticles and allows the hair color to penetrate into the cortex of the hair.
