What Is Hair

Typically hair consists of the shaft, the part you see protruding above the skin, and the root of the hair, which is inside a follicle, also known as a pit, beneath the surface of the skin. Apart from a few growing cells at the base of the root of the hair, your hair is dead tissue composed of keratin and related proteins. Hair follicles are a tubelike pocket of the epidermis, that encloses a very small part of the dermis at the base. Human hair is created by rapid division of cells at the base of follicles. The cells are pushed upward from the base of the follicle, they undergo pigmentation and harden.

The hair on your scalp and in your eyebrows and eyelashes differ from your other bodily hairs. Hair on your head grows at a rate of 5 inches per month, Long scalp hairs have a life span of 3 to 5 years on average. The average human has between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs on their heads!

There are two different types of melanin in your hair, eumelanin and phaeomelanin. The Absence of pigment in the hair produces white or gray hair. Before any permanent hair color can be put into the hair, the cuticle, or the outer layer, has to be opened.
